Last Light - 14 x 11 - Oils

It was the quality of light that inspired me to paint this. Golden hour inherently produces the best lighting, but it can be difficult to capture in the city. Here the streets are in the shade, and the shadows creep up the buildings as they try to hold onto the last light of the day.

Have wanted to post this since February when I did the illustration but waited for the magazine to be printed. Looks okay in the magazine but at a half page it doesn't quite capture the hugeness of Mike Montgomery. He's kind of a big deal.

The final product. Really happy with this one. I've got a thing for reflections, I think I was having a bit of reflection withdrawal since it's been awhile since I've done one of my rainy-night scenes. I don't know exactly what it is, but I love the pear on the far left. And it was delicious.

Forgot to post this I guess....hmmm...painted back in October. Quite like it actually. Sometimes I get tired of a painting by the time Herby Hancock comes along so it's nice to look back on finished work once I've grown less attached too it. I think this let's me look at it more objectively so I can appreciate it for what it is...which in this case, is two and a half plums.

Spent the past week in Calgary working, so haven't been able to paint, or do anything fun. Thanks boss. But here is what I started just before I left. Hopefully I'll find some time this week to get it done.

Quite like this stage of the painting. I'm a sucker for texture and transparencies.

Normally I might start painting the subject at this point, but wanted to get a dark background roughed in as a reference.

Next stage is the fun/scary part.

I love a bad pun. Had a few other title options for this post. The Verdict Is In or How do you Plead? or We Find This Painting Guilty...something to do with the end of a trial...which is how it feels to finish a painting sometimes, although this one went pretty smoothly. Just took awhile to get around to finishing...thought it would be spring (or even summer) by the time I was done but it's still snowing...and I'm still ready for spring.

Aaron Larocque. Cinematographer Extraordinaire, Artist, Legend. And he has good taste in music. His films are amazing. He is part of a new wave of filming that doesn't just focus on what is being shot, but how it's shot, taking lighting, editting and composition to a new level and creating art, not just bike videos. It's a style that compliments, beautifies and enhances the sport in a way that bikers and non bikers alike can appreciate. I don't actually watch them, but the fact that he's making them, I respect that. Joke...they actually make me want to make videos (again) and start biking. I'm getting a bike this summer and maybe a new camera so both could actually be happening soon, although both my riding and filming skills will pale in comparison I'm sure. Check out some of his work below.

A quick rough and a colour study for a possible self portrait. Been thinking about doing some watercolours...weird.

This is the first time I've used moleskin paper, I got a sketchbook from a couple friends over a year ago but it's been too nice and new to use until now. Do they make moleskin paper from the animal? Or from humans? Or from the scientific concept? Poor little mole. More moleskin practice to come.

Whenever possible, make sure you are comfortable while you paint. Play some music, light some candles, have someone rub your shoulders...whatever. If it's too cold, put on a sweater. If it's too hot, take off your pants. Pretty basic stuff.

Is It Done?

One of the hardest parts about painting is getting started. It's the initial willpower that seems so hard to come by at times, but once started it can be even harder to know when to stop. Sometimes an underpainting can be more expressive than a finished piece. Maybe it's the devil may care style of underpainting that produces these happy accidents. Without pressure to be absolutely precise, a more whimsical style of painting can be realized, and it's almost an unwillingness to preform that can achieve these strokes of luck on demand. (see what I did there...stroke of luck...brush stroke...)

It's a delicate balance at times to improve upon an underpainting, whilst saving parts of the background which one doesn't want to cover up. It's a rare opportunity to create an interesting dynamic between the contrast of tight painting and loose drawing, between thick paint and thin, between determined success and happy accidents.

I took this task on more for myself than anything else. I found the complexity and challenge of the dual images inspiring, and inspiration should never be ignored. I think even if a painting is a failure, if you feel the desire to paint it you paint it...even to just get the disaster out of your system.

Colour, Value, Edges, Drawing

Problems occur when you paint something that is not there, or not painting something that is there. This will occur in colour, values, drawing or edges...or a combination of these. A mistake in colour may have an error in value as well. Poor drawing invariably contains flawed edges. Find your mistakes and fix them. -Richard Schmid

I find it funny every year when the snow melts and the sun starts coming out. People start ignoring the temperature and forecast, shedding layers, and lie to themselves that spring, if not summer, is right around the corner...now if you'll excuse me I have to put on my spandex and tanktop and go for a jog around the seawall while blasting Toto's "Africa" on my ipod. Everybody break out the pic-a-nic baskets and head for the beach!

The Orpheum

Originally opened on November 7, 1927 as a vaudeville house, the Orpheum was the largest and most opulent theatre on the Pacific Coast. The City of Vancouver purchased the theatre on March 19, 1974 and undertook a complete restoration of the theatre's interior. The Orpheum re-opened on April 2, 1977 as the permanent home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and a restored concert hall that hosts a variety of pop, classical, choral and chamber recitals. It is also an ideal venue for concert recordings, conference sessions, seminars and film shoots.
PLEASE NOTE:
The elevator at the Orpheum is being refurbished and as of July 2, 2008, it will not be available for use. Expected completion date of the project is mid-September.

There is something about doing small studies (left) that I really enjoy. Maybe it's the freedom to experiment and make mistakes, or that it forces me to paint loose, where with a larger painting (right) I end up painting a lot tighter....which I still like, not sure which I like better though.

Hotel Reflection

My obsession with reflections is the focus of this small study (It's a healthy obsession...maybe obsession is too strong....i just like painting them). ANYWAY, you have the large reflection of the Hotel Vancouver in the adjacent building as well as the reflections in the pavement which are more subtle. To create the illusion of puddles, darker areas are blocked in with higher contrast against the reflected light compared to the rest of the street. Soft edges in the reflection also give the illusion of dryer areas where the light is more diffused against the pavement.

Juxtaposed against the light, figures become faceless shadows mingling through a sea of commercialism, edges are lost as the crowd becomes intertwined, forming a symbiotic consciousness focused on hats, t-shirts, sunglasses, toys, cds, food and other trinkets for low, low prices. Shows over...well opening night is (show still runs for another 8 days). Was quite an experience, pretty exciting, pretty strange, pretty unreal at times. Had a lot more red dots than I expected. It was a good turn out, good people, good food, good mullet. Thanks to everyone for coming. I am going to sleep now.
